The Rhône Valley wines are well known all over the world and are considered one of the best wines in France. Even 2,000 years ago Roman writer Pliny the Elder praised the wines of Côte-Rôtie. The Rhône has been a royal road for the wine. Arriving from the shores of the Mediterranean Sea, it conquered the edges of the river under the leadership of the Romans. From the first decades of our era, wines were cultivated in Côte-Rôtie and at the Hermitage (which did not yet bear these names). Today, there are two major wine-growing sectors in the Rhône Valley. Most famous wine names are Hermitage, Côte-Rôtie, Saint-Joseph, Châteauneuf-du-Pape, Crozes-Hermitage, Condrieu and many others.
The climate is hot and dry, conducive to the good maturation of the grapes. Up to 13 different grape varieties can be grown there. This is particularly the case with the most famous AOC in the sector: Châteauneuf-du-Pape. To the north, between Valence and Vienne, the vines are mostly content with the steep banks of the river. Here dominates the Syrah grape variety which expresses all its depth and complexity (AOC Côte-Rôtie, Hermitage, Saint-Joseph, etc.) or more locally Viognier for the whites (AOC Condrieu).
